Abstract:A review of the mechanics, technical components, and treatment specifics associated with extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) is presented. An overview of device similarities and differences, shock wave theory, and the use of ESWL for treatment of biliary and urinary calculi is covered. A general synopsis of relevant topics is provided with emphasis placed on those aspects that are related to sonography or may potentially require the involvement of a sonographer.
