Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation for treatment of cardiac failure in adult patients

Abstract: This report reviews our experience in venoarterial extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support treatment in adult patients with cardiac failure, as well as analysis of the risk factors of early mortality. From February 2005 to June 2008, 45 patients undergoing cardiogenic shock required temporary ECMO support. They were divided into three groups: post-cardiotomy (n=31) and post-transplantation (n=5) heart failure, decompensated heart failure (n=9). ECMO implantation was performed through the femoral ves… Show more

“…Supporting data are case series from multiple countries [36][37][38][39][40][41]. In one study involving 45 patients with refractory cardiogenic shock, ECMO was associated with survival to hospital discharge in 29% (13/45) versus the expected total absence of survival without ECMO [40].…”

“…Complications may be related to the mandatory use of anticoagulation (bleeding, thromboembolism), mechanical shear stress on cellular blood components (haemolysis) and long-term infections of the implanted materials (drive line, cannulas, device). 25,26,[29][30][31][32][33] A summary of the advantages and risks of ECLS is provided in Table 2.…”
