Extracellular superoxide dismutase and other superoxide dismutase isoenzymes in tissues from nine mammalian species

Abstract: The contents of extracellular superoxide dismutase, CuZn superoxide dismutase and Mn superoxide dismutase were determined in tissues from nine mammalian species. The pattern of CuZn superoxide dismutase distribution was similar in all species, with high activity in metabolically active organs such as liver and kidney and low activity in, for example, skeletal muscle. Mn superoxide dismutase activity was high in organs with high respiration, such as liver, kidney, and myocardium. Overall the Mn superoxide dismu… Show more

“…34,35 Interestingly TGF-␤ mRNA is considerably increased in the liver of patients with chronic hepatitis C, 36 while it is normal in PBMC from these patients (E. Larrea, unpublished data). This may contribute to explain why Mn-SOD mRNA is high in PBMC but not overexpressed in the liver in hepatitis C. If HCV infection causes similar oxidative stress in the liver as in PBMC, the lack of hepatic Mn-SOD induction in response to an altered redox state might deprive the liver of an efficient protective mechanism against the noxious effects of ROS, 25,32,37 thus facilitating oxidative hepatocellular damage in this virus infection.…”

“…There is evidence for links between oxidative stress, TGF-β1 levels and ECM levels [27]. Excessive accumulation of ECM proteins and associated myocardial fibrosis are implicated as pathogenic mechanisms in diabetic heart disease [28]. Increased fibrous ECM proteins provide the excess Cu-binding sites responsible for the accumulation of elevated loosely bound/chelatable Cu(II) in diabetes [1,3,29].…”
