Extracellular circulating miRNAs as stress-related signature to search and rescue dogs

Abstract: Our research explores serum extracellular circulating miRNAs (ecmiRNAs) involved in dog stress response immediately after the search and rescue (SAR) of missing people. The experimental plan considers four arduous SAR simulations. The SAR dogs are trained by the Alpine School of the Military Force of Guardia di Finanza (Passo Rolle, Italy). The First SAR Trial analyzed dog serum samples at rest time (T0), and immediately after SAR performance (T1) using the miRNome-wide screening next-generation sequencing (NG… Show more

“…In total, 16 miRNAs expressed in saliva and related to stress (Table 2) were selected from the literature [21][22][23] and tested on a representative number of samples (n = 30, 1 PRE and 1 POST samples for each ewe belonging to cluster 1 and 2). However, 7 miRNAs (miR-16b; -21; -24; -26a; -27a; -99a, and -223) detected reliably in the analysis were tested on all samples (n = 87).…”

“…Transferred to animal welfare, this means that positive environmental stimuli guarantee animal welfare, while negative stimuli predispose to the onset of various diseases (1). The epigenetic mechanism as a final effect has an impact on the animal phenotype, and, therefore, on its welfare and the development of behavior (2)(3)(4).…”
