Extra-Esophageal Manifestations of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease: Diagnosis and Treatment

Abstract: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a common disease that is often diagnosed based on typical symptoms of heartburn and regurgitation. In addition to these more classic manifestations, GERD is increasingly associated with extra-esophageal symptoms, including chronic cough, asthma, laryngitis, and dental erosions. Due to the poor sensitivity of endoscopy and pH monitoring, and the poor specificity of laryngoscopy, empiric therapy with proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) is now considered the initial diagnostic … Show more

“…31 The prevalence of laryngopharyngeal reflux is difficult to determine, particularly as typical heartburn is absent in 57-94% of patients. 32 However, it has been estimated to be present in 10% of patients presenting to an otolaryngologist 33 and over half the patients referred with voice disorders. 34 The diagnosis of laryngopharyngeal reflux is controversial as no ideal test is available.…”
