External green light as a new tool to change colors and nutritional components of inner leaves of head cabbages

Abstract: The color and nutritional quality of vegetables directly affect the choices of consumers and thus affect the commercial value of the vegetable products. Green light can penetrate the outer leaves and reach the inner leaves to promote photochemical reaction of the overlapping leaves of head vegetables. However, whether this promotion can increase the nutritional components and change the color of the inner leaves of head cabbages, which is one of the major head vegetables largely produced worldwide, remains unc… Show more

“…The significant and well-documented influence of nitrogen levels on cabbage quality underscores its crucial role as a nutrient essential for optimal growth and development in cabbage plants [ 91 ]. Adequate nitrogen levels result in larger, greener leaves, which contribute to the overall size and appearance of the cabbage head [ 92 ]. Cabbage plants supplied with ample nitrogen, a crucial constituent of chlorophyll vital for photosynthesis, generally yield higher, as it enhances the plant's energy production and overall yield potential [ 93 ].…”

“…Consumers often judge the quality of vegetable crops by their appearance. For example, consumers prefer densely colored cabbage leaves because they believe that the short light time and/or short growth cycle cause(s) the color of cabbage to be light, which leads to a relatively low nutritional quality ( Amagai et al, 2021 ). Moreover, different consumers make various choices regarding vegetable quality due to their different needs or preferences.…”

“…Previous studies indicate that chlorophyll also influences the plant's leaf color, and chlorophyll concentration has a high corre-lation with the value measured with the Soil Plant Analysis Development (SPAD) meter. The SPAD meter can also estimate the concentration of Chlorophyll in leaves in a nondestructive manner (Amagai et al, 2022;Xiong et al, 2015).…”
