External factors influencing Fablabs’ performance

Abstract: The main contribution of this research project is to provide statistical evidence on some of the external factors that are perceived to have significant impact on the performance of Fablabs. The success of any Fablab requires sound understanding of the external factors that affect its performance. By surveying the sample of 140 Fablabs around the world we could identify four categories of external factors considered to be relevant for the performance of Fablabs, namely -customers/beneficiaries, access to finan… Show more

“…The recognition of institutional proximity is characterised by the greatest simplifications. In this case, close entities are often understood as those that have the same institutional form, assuming that they also share a system of standards and principles (Ponds et al ., 2007). Most often, the division based on the triple helix model (Etzkowitz and Leydesdorff, 2000) is used here in enterprises, scientific research units and public administration institutions.…”

“…In the years following the crisis, Fab Lab facilities grew at an exponential rate, particularly in Europe where there was a 'veritable explosion' in their number (Ramella and Manzo, 2018: 341). In the wake of the crisis, promoting economic development and maximising innovation and entrepreneurial activity became a key priority for governments worldwide (Pauceanu and Dempere, 2018). However, within the growing literature on Fab Labs there is an increasing recognition that they function as third places (Moilanen, 2012;Bar-El and Zuckerman, 2016;Taylor et al, 2016).…”

“…Previous academic research works have provided evidence about the relationship between entrepreneurship and economic growth and job creation (Baumol et al, 2007;Bjørnskov et al, 2016;Boudreaux & Caudill, 2019;Heckelman, 2000;Maradana et al, 2017;Pauceanu et al, 2018;Rypestøl, 2017). As a result, government authorities worldwide struggle to implement policies to enable entrepreneurship and harvest the tax benefits resulting from more rapid economic growth and subsequent job creation.…”
