Extensive Histological and Cytological Survey of Patients with Acute Leukaemia in "Complete Remission"

Abstract: MEDIBCRAITIOA volunteers, and a British strain in doses ranging from 10' to 106 EID.0 to 30 volunteers. One month later 75 of the vaccinated volunteers were given 104 EID50 of the British vaccine. In addition, 55 volunteers with neutralizing antibody were given 107 EID50 of the Iksha vaccine by drops or spray, and 53 volunteers were given the same dose of vaccine inactivated with formalin.Of the volunteers without antibody 41% had mild respiratory symptoms after the first dose, and 8% after the challenging dos… Show more

“…7 Furthermore, accurate whole-body tumor burden quantification via a single, small BM or peripheral blood sample requires homogenous tumor cell distribution, a condition that might not be met at remission. 21,22 Nevertheless, for both ALL and AML, persistence of MRD at various stages during and after curative intent chemotherapy has now repeatedly been associated with higher risk of relapse and inferior survival, thereby largely dismissing these concerns. 7,9,13 PROGNOSTIC SIGNIFICANCE OF PRE-HCT MRD As transplantation is often considered for acute leukemia patients in morphologic CR, it is important to define the significance of MRD in this situation.…”

“…In addition to the aforementioned technical limitations specific to flow cytometric detection of MRD, other factors may affect any method of MRD detection. For example, the anatomic distribution of leukemic cells during clinical remission may be uneven, 63,64 leading to sampling variability and false-negative results.…”

“…Chemotherapies can have differential effects on leukemic clearance of different organ systems, and the kidney might still harbor malignant cells despite bone marrow clearance. 19 These observations, however, were made at times when older and less-intensive chemotherapy protocols were being used. With the advent of more-intensive induction regimens, the prognostic value of renal enlargement has been diminished, at least in children.…”
