Extending the lighting design objectives procedure for holistic lighting solutions

Abstract: The author has previously proposed a novel spreadsheet-based lighting design objectives procedure (LiDOs) that enables practitioners to reconcile interacting LiDOs relating to the spatial distribution of illumination within a space, and this procedure has been successfully adopted by several lighting design practices. This paper proposes that the procedure is developed into an extended computer-based lighting design tool (LiDOs2) that includes LiDOs relating to spectral and temporal illumination distributions,… Show more

“…Performance specifications for lighting installations related to specific applications could be routinely obtained by application of the LiDOs procedure. In its present form, this comprises a DFD but proposals are in hand to extend the specification to include spectral and temporal flux distributions, 24 which could include recent proposals for circadian effects of lighting. 25 It may be noted that the sequence of the LiDOs procedure is the reverse of current calculation procedures.…”

“…However, instead of the luminance-related brightness concept that Waldram used, I chose spatial brightness 3 for specifying overall impression, and John Lynes’ constancy-based approach 4 for visual emphasis. These concepts formed the basis of the LiDOs Procedure, 5 and from there on, as they say, the rest is history.…”
