Extending the Global Sensitivity Analysis of the SimSphere model in the Context of its Future Exploitation by the Scientific Community

Abstract: In today's changing climate, the development of robust, accurate and globally applicable models is imperative for a wider understanding of Earth's terrestrial biosphere. Moreover, an understanding of the representation, sensitivity and coherence of such models are vital for the operationalisation of any physically based model. A Global Sensitivity Analysis (GSA) was conducted on the SimSphere land biosphere model in which a meta-modelling method adopting Bayesian theory was implemented. Initially, effects of a… Show more

“…In cross-validation procedure, a series of left-out points were estimated as output from the code which we actually know the true values. Therefore, the error values are readily available [40]. GEM-SA calculates the cross-validation root-mean-squared error (RMSE, Equation 3) and root-mean-squared standardized error (RMSSE, Equation (4)) from the results of the cross-validation [30], and the sigma squared (σ 2 ) value.…”

“…Components (leaf and soil) temperature and land surface temperature (LST) are used in energy balance models and algorithms for evapotranspiration estimation. Studies that conducted a GSA for LST include the hydrological model MIKE SHE [80], global land surface models ORCHIDEE [81] and Noah-MP [82] and soil-vegetation-atmosphere transfer model SimSphere [83]. Compared to SCOPE these models have a limited description of radiative transfer processes.…”

“…For SimSphere model outgoing thermal radiation was shown to be dependent on the terrain aspect, LAI and soil moisture content (SMC) [83]. SCOPE does not take the surface slope into account.…”

“…Later, ref. [59] conducted a GSA on SimSphere, employing a meta-modeling approach based on Bayesian theory by investigating the sensitivity of previously examined parameters [58] parameters with the addition of two parameters examined for the first time, namely, daily average longwave upwelling radiation (L up ) and daily average longwave downwelling radiation (L down ). The study initially focused on the effects of uniform PDFs for the inputs of the model and the subsequent SA of key parameters simulated at different output times.…”
