Extended spectrum AmpC and metallo-beta-lactamases in Serratia and Citrobacter spp. in a disc approximation assay

Abstract: Objectives: This study aimed to develop a novel model for detection of extended spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL), AmpC and metallo-betalactamase (MBL) producing Serratia and Citrobacter species using cefoperazone sulbactam as well as other inducer-substrate combinations in a disc approximation assay. In the absence of molecular tools in developing countries, we attempted to standardize simple phenotypic techniques for detection of beta-lactamases to allow effective patient care in our countries. These techniques… Show more

“…contributed to 9.4% of all UTIs in hospitalized patients, and the resistance rate to ciprofloxacin (61%) was almost the same as our findings study [17]. In contrast to the present study, a study from India reported 82.30% (107/130) carbapenem resistance among C. freundii recovered from clinical specimens, and 65% isolates were considered MDR [18].…”

“…In this study, the C. freundii isolate was also tested positive for ESBL production (7). In India, among the C. freundii isolates recovered from clinical specimens, 35.4% and 26.9% were positive for ESBL and MBL [18].…”

“…Induction of AmpC synthesis was based on the disc approximation assay using imipenem as inducer. [ 15 ] Detection of MBL was done by Hodge test and Double Disc synergy test using EDTA. The method was as described by Lee et al .…”

“…Citrobacter is a genus of Gram-negative coliform bacteria within the enterobacteriaceae family. Many of the species, including C freundii , have a high prevalence of extended spectrum β-lactamase, AmpC and metallo-β-lactamase, rendering them resistant to ampicillin and first-generation cephalosporins 14 . In addition, some citrobacter isolates may be resistant to multiple antibiotics due to plasmid-encoded resistance genes 15 .…”
