Extended Prandial Glycemic Profiles of Foods as Assessed Using Continuous Glucose Monitoring Enhance the Power of the 120-Minute Glycemic Index

Abstract: The 120-minute glycemic index fails to fully account for changes in glycemia after ingestion of a mixed meal because glycemia remains above baseline for a longer period. The CGMS is a convenient method to determine the glucose response/GIs over intervals extended up to 210 minutes, which is adequate time for the absorption of most foods.

“…After various types of food consumption, glycaemia remains above the baseline for a longer period, and the CGMS is a convenient method to determine the glucose response. We observed this in the post-meal reaction over 180 minutes, which was a compatible with the result obtained by Chlup [20].…”

“…The development of CGMS technology is a great step toward modern diabetes management 13 . CGMS has also been used to investigate the glycaemic indexes of food at different times of the day 14,15 . This overcomes the limitations of traditional monitoring by producing glucose profiles instead of distinct measurements, real-time glucose values, glucose trends and warnings when glucose values approach dangerously low or high concentrations.…”

“…Nevertheless, the evaluation of individual subjects revealed potential influence of OAD on GIs in some persons and some foodstuffs and no or even adverse influence in others. Considering the already known large interindividual variability of GI due to various factors, 22 and recent findings on extended prandial glycemic profiles of foods, 40,41 this observation appears to be worthy of further investigation. In addition, the OAD withdrawal lasted only 8 days, which is a relatively short time, and the effects of OAD may have persisted during this interval.…”
