Extended Operation Testing of Stirling Convertors in Support of Stirling Radioisotope Power System Development

Abstract: 100 We class Stirling convertors began extended operation testing at NASA Glenn Research Center (GRC) in 2003 with a pair of Technology Demonstration Convertors (TDCs) operating in air. Currently, the number of convertors on extended operation test has grown to 12, including both TDCs and Advanced Stirling Convertors (ASCs) operating both in air and in thermal vacuum. Additional convertors and an electrically heated radioisotope generator will be put on test in the near future. This testing has provided data t… Show more

“…Therefore, the FPSE has attracted considerable attention from researchers worldwide. In the 1990s, NASA and MTI developed a 25‐kW FPSE for the Space Power Demonstrator Engine program, which consisted of two 12.5‐kW FPSEs and was applied in space exploration engineering 10,11 . Since 2003, NASA has conducted research on a 110‐W FPSE for a radioisotope power system program, and a pair of 55‐W FPSEs have been tested in a vacuum environment 12,13 .…”
