Extended Kalman filter‐based method for inter‐turn fault detection of the switched reluctance motors

Abstract: Switched reluctance motors (SRMs) are extensively utilised in electric vehicles (EVs) due to some outstanding capabilities such as rugged and fault tolerant structure. Since the excitation of the phases is performed independently in the SRM, the motor could continue operation even in case of fault occurrence in one of the phases by disabling the faulty phase. However, to improve the reliability of the SRM for EV applications, an efficient fault diagnosis approach should be employed. In this study, an on-line m… Show more

“…Despite the previous works have been valuable and have made significant advancements in the ATC approach for SRMs, they have overlooked potential fault situations that may occur in SRMs. Generally, faults in SRMs could be in the drive circuit (power converter), or internally within stator windings [30,31]. The literature mainly focusses on faults in the power converter switches [10][11][12][13][14].…”

“…In [24], the authors use an extended conventional state vector Kalman Filter algorithm to estimate three short-circuited turn ratios for a permanent-magnet synchronous generator. In [25], the EKF was applied to Switched reluctance motors (SRMs) for fault detection based on the residual signal of the resistance.…”

“…While in [15], the short-circuit fault diagnostics are also made using an EKF. In particular, two examples of diagnosis methods based on the EKF for the SRM, are as follows: ref [16], in which winding resistance is estimated to help detect inter-turn faults, and [17], in which the inter-turn fault is detected from chopping switching signals. A recent survey on detection and isolation methods for the SRM was presented in [18].…”
