Extended Analysis of the Spectrum of Triply-ionized Ytterbium (Yb IV) and Transition Probabilities

Abstract: The spectrum of Yb IV has been reinvestigated and its analysis has been extended. The present work is supported by the comparison of line intensities with transition probabilities derived from the Cowan (1981) codes. Starting from the ¢rst analysis by Sugar, Kaufman and Spector (1978), the number of established levels has been increased from 111 to 193, including high excitation levels of the new 4f 12 7s+4f 12 6d even con¢gurations. Of the 1023 classi-¢ed lines about one half are new. Computed transition prob… Show more

“…In the present paper, we report lifetime measurements of two 4f 13 6p energy levels in Yb III together with a comprehensive calculation performed using the relativistic Hartree-Fock (HFR) method taking both intravalence correlation and core-polarization effects into account. This paper extends lifetime measurements and calculations in Yb ions previously reported by Biémont et al (1998), Li et al (1999) and Wyart et al (2001).…”

“…In the even-parity case, the lowest doubly excited levels of 4f 12 (5d + 6s) 2 had been predicted above 103 000 cm −1 (Brewer 1971), which leaves 4f 13 6p free of close configuration-interaction effects, but makes 4f 13 5f and 4f 13 7p totally overlapped. During a recent investigation of Yb IV (Wyart et al 2001), more lines with Yb III character than expected for the transition arrays 4f…”

“…These calculations are an extension of our previous studies of triply ionized lanthanides La IV (Biémont et al 2009), Ce IV (Zhang et al 2001a), Pr IV (Enzonga Yoca and Quinet 2013) and Yb IV (Wyart et al 2001). …”

“…In the measurements, a suitable magnetic field was applied to reduce the recombination between electrons and the ions and thus the background light from the recombination, and special care was exercised to avoid flightout-of-view effects on the lifetime measurements for the high-velocity ions. It is difficult to measure accurately radiative properties for highly ionized atoms; instead, results for radiative parameters were frequently obtained by theoretical calculations [1][2][3]. The difficulties stem from the fact that it is hard to achieve a stable ion source, and to avoid various detrimental effects influencing lifetime measurements.…”
