Expressivism, Relativism, and the Analytic Equivalence Test

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to show that, pace (Field, 2009), MacFarlane’s assessment relativism and expressivism should be sharply distinguished. We do so by arguing that relativism and expressivism exemplify two very different approaches to context-dependence. Relativism, on the one hand, shares with other contemporary approaches a bottom–up, building block, model, while expressivism is part of a different tradition, one that might include Lewis’ epistemic contextualism and Frege’s content individuation, wi… Show more

“…We will argue that each type of pragmatism harbours a different model of content individuation. The first kind lends support to the building-block model of propositional individuation whereas the second kind relies on what we have dubbed somewhere else the 'organic model' (Frápolli and Villanueva 2015). Even if context intervenes in the individuation of content, the building-block model confers a relevant place to the Principle of Compositionality, which systematically gives rise to a conception of propositions as structured entities.…”

“…Para el año 2018 apareció un nuevo término introducido en el discurso, en medio de las elecciones presidenciales. Resulta paradójico, que al mismo se le hayan atribuido condiciones de verdad de acuerdo con el signicado otorgado (Frápolli y Villanueva, 2015) y que en los enunciados en que se prorió el discurso fueron tan bien ejecutados que no descuidaron el uso de operadores que resultaron convincentes para la toma de decisiones.…”

“…One of the characteristics of analytic sentences is the congruence of the relationship between the constituents that express the same proposition (Frápolli & Villanueva, 2015). The sentence above describes such relationship where the constituents are mutually covering each other.…”
