Expression Profiling of Ribosomal Protein Gene Family in Dehydration Stress Responses and Characterization of Transgenic Rice Plants Overexpressing RPL23A for Water-Use Efficiency and Tolerance to Drought and Salt Stresses

Abstract: Our previous findings on the screening of a large-pool of activation tagged rice plants grown under limited water conditions revealed the activation of Ribosomal Protein Large (RPL) subunit genes, RPL6 and RPL23A in two mutants that exhibited high water-use efficiency (WUE) with the genes getting activated by the integrated 4x enhancers (Moin et al., 2016a). In continuation of these findings, we have comprehensively characterized the Ribosomal Protein (RP) gene family including both small (RPS) and large (RPL)… Show more

“…Ribosomal proteins (RPs) are well known for their universal roles in forming and stabilizing the ribosomal complex to mediate protein synthesis. The high expression of RPL23A resulted in enhanced drought and salt stress tolerance in rice seedlings by increasing the fresh weight, root length, and proline and chlorophyll contents [30]. One 60S ribosomal protein was up-regulated in our study, suggesting its roles in response to LK stress in alligator weed leaves.…”

“…From reported studies, when facing stress, ribosome inactive proteins could be induced and contributes to defense mechanisms [62]. More than 50% of the ribosomal protein genes were upregulated in shoot and root tissues of rice, they might have a common role in inducing tolerance under drought stress [63].…”

“…Highly significant expression of the TraesCS2A01G108900 gene that belongs to ribosomal protein large (RPL19) in many wheat developmental organs at different developmental stages suggests its role in wheat growth and development. RPL19 was highly expressed in the shoot and root of rice under drought stress, suggesting its responsibility for drought tolerance and improvement of water use efficiency 44 . In accordance with our results, the gene was associated with HD and expressed in grain and spike, indicating that RPL19 is involved in the stress-tolerance pathway through earliness of the development, which might have influenced the grain yield.…”
