Expression patterns of the bone morphogenetic protein genes Bmp‐4 and Bmp‐2 in the developing chick face suggest a role in outgrowth of the primordia

Abstract: Bone morphogenetic proteins BMP-4 and BMP-2 are closely-related members of the transforming growth factor-p superfamily that have been implicated in signalling in a number of developmental systems. To determine whether they could be involved in the epithelial-mesenchyma1 interactions that control face development, we mapped the distribution of Bmp-4 and B m p 2 gene transcripts in the developing chick facial primordia. At stages when primordia were becoming established, Bmp-4 transcripts were present in specif… Show more

“…Several BMPs (BMP2, BMP4, BMP7) and BMP antagonists (NOGGIN, BAMBI) are expressed in the epithelium and mesenchyme of the frontonasal mass, in some cases overlapping with TBX22 and other times in complementary domains (Francis-West et al, 1994;Ashique et al, 2002a;Foppiano et al, 2007;Higashihori et al, 2008). From these data, it is not possible to predict whether increased or decreased levels of BMP signaling affect TBX22 expression.…”

“…At stage 20, BMP4 is expressed in the epithelium, but the expression is gradually switched to the mesenchyme from stage 24 to 28. BMP2 is more diffusely expressed in the epithelium from stage 20 to 28 (Francis-West et al, 1994). Ectopic delivery of BMP2 and BMP4 proteincoated beads cause a thickened or bifurcated cartilage to form, depending on the position of the beads (Barlow and Francis-West, 1997).…”

“…Bmp2 and Bmp4 are expressed in discrete spatiotemporal patterns within the ectomesenchyme and overlying ectoderm (in particular along the oral midline and pharyngeal plate) of the early craniofacial primordia, as well as dorsal midline of the neural tube (Francis-West et al, 1994;Bennett et al, 1995;Liu et al, 2005a,b). Ectopic application of Bmps in mandibular explants has been shown to induce the expression of Msx and Dlx genes (Bei and Maas, 1998;Thomas et al, 1997Thomas et al, , 2000Tucker et al, 1998).…”
