Expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in various compartments of the human hair follicle

Abstract: Hair follicle vascularization appears to be closely related to the processes involved in hair cycle regulation, in which growth factors, cytokines and other bioactive molecules are involved. In particular, vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), essential for angiogenesis and vascular permeability, may be responsible for maintaining proper vasculature around the hair follicle during the anagen growth phase. The aim of our study was to compare the in vitro angiogenic capacity, i.e. the steady-state expressio… Show more

“…Expression of VEGFRs may therefore indicate local VEGF activity. In the present study of expression of VEGFRs under orthophysiological conditions, localization of VEGFR-1 and -2 in endothelia adjacent to epithelia corresponded with expression of VEGF-A mRNA that has been described in some of these epithelia, such as choroid plexus, kidney glomeruli Esser et al 1998), gastrointestinal epithelium (Shifren et al 1994;Terris et al 1998), and epithelium of hair follicles (Shifren et al 1994;Kozlowska et al 1998;Yano et al 2001). Localization of VEGFR-3 in endothelium of gastrointestinal mucosa is in line with expression of VEGF-C mRNA that was found in small intestine (Joukov et al 1996).…”

“…VEGF mRNA expression in normal human hair follicles varies during the hair cycle. It is strongly expressed in the anagen phase and decreased in the catagen and telogen phases (28,29). Our experimental results, therefore, suggest that treatment of DP cells with adenosine is effective in maintaining high IGF-1 and VEGF expressions and the ability to induce hair growth in DP cells.…”

“…Ангиогенный фактор VEGF в последнее время при-знают основным медиатором роста и циклического функционирования волосяного фолликула (ВФ) [8]. VEGF обнаруживается в кератиноцитах наружного эпидермального влагалища корня (НЭВК) и в фи-бробластах волосяного сосочка [9][10][11]. Ранние эта-пы анагена сопровождаются усилением экспрессии VEGF и восстановлением васкуляризации дермаль-ного сосочка фолликула [8].…”
