Expression of TNF‐α in oral lichen planus treated with fluocinolone acetonide 0.1%

Abstract: Our study exhibited that TNF-alpha may be associated with the immunopathogenesis of OLP in Thai patients and FAO 0.1% had an effect on the reduction of TNF-alpha expression.

“…Many factors are involved in the pathogenesis of OLP such as matrix metalloproteinases, chymase, tryptase and proinflammatory cytokines (5). Recently, TNF-α which is one of the proinflammatory cytokines has been reported to play a role in the pathogenesis and inflammatory process of OLP (6). The immunological abnormality leads to a delay in the growth of mucosal epithelium which is responsible for hyperkeratosis (7).…”

“…21,24 In oral LP, levels of TNF-a decrease after steroid treatment. 25,26 There have also been reports of successful treatment of LP with the TNF-a inhibitor etanercept. 27 Based on these observations, the development of lichenoid reactions in patients taking TNF-a inhibitors is unexpected.…”

“…TNF-α is a cytokine that plays an important role in host defense, including immunoregulatory responses implicated in the pathogenesis of many inflammatory and autoimmune diseases [5] . In the present study, TNF-α in normal skin was predominantly localized in the basal cell layers of epidermis.…”
