Expression of the Hsp83 gene in response to diapause and thermal stress in the moth Sesamia nonagrioides

Abstract: A full-length Hsp83, named SnoHsp83, cDNA from the corn stalk borer, Sesamia nonagrioides, was cloned and sequenced. Genomic analysis showed that the SnoHsp83 gene is unique. The size of the SnoHsp83 cDNA was found to be approximately 2.6 kb. The deduced polypeptide comprised 717 amino acid residues, with a molecular mass of 82.6 kDa. It contained all the highly conserved amino acid motifs that characterize the cytosolic members of the hsp90 family. We investigated the expression of SnoHsp83 gene in response t… Show more

“…The amount of SnoHsp70 mRNA dips as S. nonagrioides enters diapause, whereas the cognate SnoHsc70 mRNA multiplies in deep diapause [112], as does mRNA encoded by the Hsp83 gene, a homologue of Hsp90 [113]. These observations suggest diapause-related roles for Hsc70 and Hsp90, perhaps in maintaining protein structure and contributing to ecdysone action.…”

“…However, two large Hsps (Hsp67 and Hsp83) show the opposite pattern and are upregulated by 48h after the first metabolic rate increase. Hsps can be upregulated during periods of rapid development (Michaud et al, 1997), and Hsp83 (also commonly referred to as Hsp90) in particular shows expression patterns that track pulses of ecdysone during development in D. melanogaster (Thomas and Lengyel, 1986) and appears to be associated with molting in the moth Sesamia nonagrioides (Gkouvitsas et al, 2009).…”

“…Diapause is usually limited to one life stage per organism which displays varying degrees of metabolic suppression and stress tolerance, occurring in embryos of the silkworm, Bombyx mori (Moribe et al, 2010), larvae of the moth Sesamia nonagrioides (Gkouvitsas et al, 2009a;Gkouvitsas et al, 2009b), pupae of the flesh fly Sarcophaga crassipalpis (Li et al, 2007) and adults of the mosquito Culex pipiens (Kim et al, 2010).…”
