“…Single-cell RT-PCR from genetically- and physiologically-identified NG2 + cells in hippocampus of P9-12 mice and cortex of P7-11 and P21-29 mice showed considerable heterogeneity of GABA A R subunit expression (Balia et al, 2015; Passlick et al, 2013). Consistent with the in vitro studies, all α subunits except α6 were expressed to some extent; α3 and α4 were upregulated with age and α5 was downregulated.…”

“…This is in contrast to mature neurons, in which the opening of Cl − channels typically causes membrane hyperpolarization. Experiments performed in the perforated patch configuration, which preserves the native internal Cl − concentration, revealed that GABA A -mediated currents in NG2 + cells have a reversal potential in the range of −30 to −40 mV, significantly more positive than the RMP or the reversal potential of neuronal GABA A Rs (∼ −70 mV) (Lin and Bergles, 2004; Passlick et al, 2013; Tanaka et al, 2009; Tong et al, 2009). These findings led to the conclusion that NG2 + cells maintain higher internal Cl − concentration than mature neurons.…”

“…Subsequent to recording in situ, the cytoplasm of individual astrocytes was harvested and RT-PCR was performed (for details see the electronic supplementary material and [36]). …”

“…[1] unit composition of the glial GABA A receptors in the hippocampus and neocortex. In addition to various α and β isoforms, the cells also have the γ2 subunit, although its expression is confined to the postsynaptic membrane; on the other hand, extrasynaptic GABA A receptors lack this subunit [6]. In the neocortex, γ2 is downregulated during postnatal development and this change is accompanied by a loss of the GABAergic synaptic innervation of NG2 glia [7].…”
