Expression of telomerase & its significance in the diagnosis of pancreatic cancer

Abstract: Pancreatic cancer has one of the worst prognoses among all types of cancers. The survival rate is less than 5 per cent; this is due to difficulty in diagnosing at an early stage. Despite the improvements in diagnostic imaging techniques such as computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging, etc., the early diagnosis of pancreatic cancer is still difficult. Alternative methods of diagnosing pancreatic cancer at an early stage are presently been explored. The detection of telomerase activity has been proposed … Show more

“…Human telomerase reverse transriptase (hTERT), a part of telomerase and crucial subunit for enzyme activity, pretend to be a marker of PDAC development. Its expression, even better than telomerase activity, predict low outcome in individuals with PC 26.…”

“…Expression of 95 per cent telomerase activity has been detected in pancreatic adenocarcinoma. Thereby, the detection of telomerase activity has been proposed to be a useful tool in the diagnosis of pancreatic cancer 70 . To include telomere as CAD biomarkers, TL measurement variation needs to be reduced that presently restricts our means to perceive consistent result in TL assessment.…”

“…Telomeres are maintained by telomerase, a multi-subunit enzyme with an RNA component, which acts as a template for making telomeric repeats and a protein reverse transcriptase component, hTERT, which catalyzes the synthesis of hexameric repeats TTAGGG8. Most of the cancer cells reactivate telomerase activity9, and it may be the target for treating cancers10. Although several studies have documented synthesis of chitosan-coated PLGA-loaded hTERT siRNA nanoparticle, but its effect on cancer cells remains unexplored.…”
