Expression of neuronal nitric oxide synthase in the developing superficial layers of the rat superior colliculus

Abstract: We investigated the level of expression of neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS) in the retinorecipient layers of the rat superior colliculus during early postnatal development. Male and female Lister rats ranging in age between the day of birth (P0) and the fourth postnatal week were used in the present study. Two biochemical methods were used, i.e., in vitro measurement of NOS specific activity by the conversion of [ 3 H]-arginine to [ 3 H]-citrulline, and analysis of Western blotting immunoreactive bands fr… Show more

“…Nitric Oxide is a key molecule in plastic developing pre-and postnatal periods expressed in the SC (Scheiner et al, 2001 ; Giraldi-Guimarães et al, 2004 ) and it is especially linked with Shank3 mutation and ASD (Tripathi et al, 2020 ).…”

“…It is formed by the enzymatic oxidation of L-arginine to L-citrulline [1], with the release of NO in the presence of oxygen and NADPH using flavin adenine dinucleotide, flavin mononucleotide, heme, thiol and tetrahydrobiopterin as cofactors [2].…”

“…Inflammation and oxidative oxidation might stimulate the production of Aβ, resulting in the aggravation of AD. Neuronal nitric oxide synthase (nNOS), along with iNOS and endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS), synthesizes NO from L-arginine and molecular oxygen [45,46]. Nitric oxide is a reactive free radical and shares several properties with a neurotransmitter in the nervous system.…”
