Expression of intermediate filament in endoometrial glands changes with the onset of pregnancy and in endometriosis

Abstract: Appropriate endometrial differentiation is believed to be a prerequisite for pregnancy success. This study investigates the expression of two intermediate filament proteins, cytokeratin and vimentin, in human endometrium and first trimester decidua and in ectopic endometrium from women with endometriosis. Stromal elements, including vascular endothelial cells, were consistently vimentin-positive and cytokeratin-negative. Surface and glandular epithelial cells of human endometrium co-expressed vimentin and cyto… Show more

“…MSCs migrated to the periglandular space and in few cases contributed significantly to glandular epithelia improvement. As shown previously, the co-expression of cytokeratin and vimentin is normal during the proliferation phase in human but not in equine endometrium [27][29]. The co-expression of both of these proteins in epithelial cells has been observed in different tumors and for many years CK18 has been recognized as an epithelial marker in histopathological diagnostic [30], [31].…”

“…Surface and glandular epithelial cells of human endometrium have been shown to express VIM during the menstrual cycle (Norwitz et al 1991). Decidualisation of endometrial stromal fibroblasts into epithelial-like cells is suggested to limit conceptus trophoblast invasion through the uterine wall during invasive implantation.…”
