Expression of intercellular adhesion molecules on circulating lymphocytes in relation to different manifestations of cow's milk allergy

Abstract: We suggest that the high expression of ICAM-1 on peripheral blood lymphocytes may reflect enhanced stimulation of T cells in vivo and their migration to the effector tissues in an early-phase of developing CMA. Furthermore, high ICAM-1 expression may be associated with the presence of multiorgan manifestations of CMA, whereas high LFA-1 expression may reflect the IgE-mediated disease.

“…Herein we showed that endogenously activated PF-derived NK cells express increased amounts of ICAM-1 and LFA-1 molecules, as has been observed in peripheral lymphocytes from other inflammatory diseases [32][33][34]. Furthermore, we observed differential expression of ICAM-1 and LFA-1, which is consistent with the functional divergent activities of CD56 bright and CD56 dim subsets [7].…”

“…The role of ICAM-1 has been widely studied in APC and endothelial cells, however, little is known about its expression and function on human lymphocytes in an inflammatory context [31][32][33][34]. To address this, we evaluated ICAM-1 expression on lymphocyte subpopulations in PBMC and PF mononuclear cells (PFMC) from patients with tuberculous pleurisy (TB-PF).…”

“…Circulating peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBLs) generally express an inactive form of LFA-1, which is crucial to maintain homeostasis, since constitutively active LFA-1 can cause instantaneous aggregation of circulating cells and clogging of the vessels. Activation of LFA-1 is a prerequisite for ligand binding [19,20]. Binding of Mn 2+ directly activates LFA-1, whereas Mg 2+ supports LFA-l-mediated adhesion only when some additional stimuli (e.g.…”
