Expression of hormone receptors, adipophilin, and GCDFP‐15 in mucinous carcinoma of the skin

Abstract: This report is the first to show AR expression in PCMC. All of followed cases manifested indolent clinical course, and the prognostic significance of hormone receptors in PCMC remains unclear. The negative immunoreactivity of PCMC for adipophilin and positivity for GCDFP-15 suggests a more likely relationship to apocrine than to sebaceous glands.

“…Immunohistochemistry plays a key role in characterizing PMCS and differentiating it from metastatic mucinous carcinomas of the skin. 8,13,21,25,26,29,35–42 Mucinous adenocarcinomas commonly metastasizing to the skin, include gastrointestinal tract and breast. PMCS are usually positive for pan-cytokeratin (AE1/AE3), Cam 5.2, BerEP4, cytokeratin 7, EMA, pCEA, and estrogen and progesterone receptors.…”

“…The role of adjuvant therapy remains unclear. Most tumors are resistant to radiotherapy and chemotherapy [ 11 , 54 , 57 , 80 , 88 , 97 , 294 , 300 ]. Primary or adjuvant radiotherapy may be considered in patients with microcystic adnexal carcinoma, and some cases of syringocystadenocarcinoma papilliferum, malignant mixed tumor, digital papillary adenocarcinoma, or signet-ring cell/histiocytoid carcinoma were also treated with successful radiation therapy [ 3 , 43 , 47 , 82 , 112 , 116 , 117 , 170 , 171 , 198 ].…”

“…Lesions exhibit tumor nests suspended in abundant mucin pools with focal strands or nests of neoplastic cells infiltrating the dermis. Cells are characterized by bland cytological features and occasional mitoses [ 97 ]. Neuroendocrine differentiation and immunophenotype can be identified locally.…”

“…34,35 Primary cutaneous mucinous carcinoma also expresses other cytokeratins (AE1/AE3, CAM5.2) as well as epithelial membrane antigen (EMA), carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), and GCDFP-15. 19,26,36,37 The expression of multiple breast markers (ER, PR, and GCDFP-15) makes PCMC difficult to differentiate from metastatic breast cancer on histopathologic and immunohistochemical grounds alone. 32 In these cases, the identification of a myoepithelial layer (in situ component) may help to confirm the cutaneous origin of the tumor.…”
