“…When GSI was low, the gonad was not enough for multiple biochemical component determination. Compared to lipid and protein, glycogen is the main energy reserve for gametogenesis in oysters, and the changes in glycogen content during the reproductive cycle reflect the strategy used to provide energy required for gametogenesis (Acarli et al, ; Zeng et al, ). There are two main types of strategy: conservative, in which energy is stored in somatic tissues such as the adductor muscle, digestive glands and mantle; and opportunistic, in which energy is obtained mainly from recently ingested food when food is abundant and of high quality (Bayne, ).…”

In oysters such as C. angulata and C. gigas, GSK3β gene expression was reported to be high along with glycogen content in the adductor muscle at the time of gonad development (Zeng et al 2013;Li et al 2017). This stored energy is used for sexual maturity.…”
