Expression of Gangliosides GD3 and 3′‐isoLM1 in Autopsy Brains from Patients with Malignant Tumors

Abstract: Three autopsy brains from patients who succumbed to malignant gliomas have been analyzed in various regions with regard to their ganglioside content. The study focused on the gangliosides GD3 and 3'-isoLM1, which in a previous study of biopsies were found to be associated with these tumors. In particular, 3'-isoLM1, was suggested to be a marker for malignant gliomas. The highest concentrations (200-1,000 nmol of sialic acid/g wet weight) of GD3 was found in specimens of macroscopically pure tumor, where the pr… Show more

“…The increase of GD3 was most significant, but the correlation between GD3 and malignancy remains obscure (15,16). In addition, the lacto-series gangliosides 3′-isoLM1 and 3′,6′-isoLD1 are reported to be major gangliosides in human gliomas (16)(17)(18). Because some of these glioma-associated gangliosides are rarely expressed or even are absent in normal tissues (19), they are suitable for targeted therapy (20).…”

“…In this study, we demonstrated that all tumor cell lines also expressed GD3 ganglioside, in addition to SGGLs. It is not surprising that GD3 could be a major surface marker of tumors, especially in neural tumors, such as melanoma [42,43] , brain tumors [44] , astrocytoma [45,46] , glioma [47] , neuroblastoma [48] , meningioma [49,50] , and intracranial tumors [51] . Serum antibodies against GD3 or OAc-GD3 have been shown to be elevated in some patients with melanoma [52] .…”
