Expression of gamma‐glutamyltranspeptidase in cultures of spontaneously and chemically transformed rat liver cells

Abstract: The expression of gamma-glutamyltranspeptidase (gamma-GTP) and the relationship between this enzyme activity and tumorigenicity were studied in 38 tumorigenic and non-tumorigenic epithelial cell lines derived from livers of normal and aminoazo-dye-fed rats. Nine of 22 non-tumorigenic epithelial cell lines exhibited gamma-GTP-positive cells, whereas 9 of 16 tumorigenic epithelial cell lines did not exhibit gamma-GTP-positive cells. This finding revealed that no correlation existed between the acquisition of gam… Show more

“…Thus, the cell lines obtained (6F-6 and 6G-5) exhibited morphological and chromosomal abnormalities and GGT activity, but produced no tumors in syngeneic animals (Miyazaki et al, 19826;1983). As shown in the text, even after a further expression time of about 3 to 4 months, these cell lines exhibited neither the capacity for growth in soft agar nor tumorigenicity.…”

“…However, none of the epithelial-type cell lines obtained in the previous studies produced tumors in syngeneic rats after inoculation approximately 200 days following initiation of primary culture (Miyazaki et al, 19826;1983). Therefore, it appears that epithelial-type cell lines may be in preneoplastic stages.…”
