Expression of Finger Millet EcDehydrin7 in Transgenic Tobacco Confers Tolerance to Drought Stress

Abstract: One of the critical alarming constraints for agriculture is water scarcity. In the current scenario, global warming due to climate change and unpredictable rainfall, drought is going to be a master player and possess a big threat to stagnating gene pool of staple food crops. So it is necessary to understand the mechanisms that enable the plants to cope with drought stress. In this study, effort was made to prospect the role of EcDehydrin7 protein from normalized cDNA library of drought tolerance finger millet … Show more

“…The transgenic plants showed better growth under drought and salinity stress compared to wild-type. In order to understand the mechanisms that enable the plants to cope with drought stress, Singh R. K. et al (2015) established the role of drought-tolerant finger millet EcDehydrin7 protein in transgenic tobacco. They also observed relatively high expression of EcDehydrin7 protein compared to wild type in biochemical assays as well as qRT PCR analyses of transgenic tobacco plants, which clearly envisaged that finger millet EcDehydrin7 protein can be used in other food crops for development of drought-tolerant transgenic.…”

“…A single gene known as -carbonic anhydrase (PgCA) was continuously upregulated in pearl millet exposed to several abiotic stimuli such as drought, salinity, and heat [57]. There are other genes which are known to be involved in drought response or tolerance in millets were EcDehydrin 7 [49], Ec-apx1 [50], EcbHLH57 [51], EcbZIP60 [52], EcGBF3 [53], EcbZIP17 [54], mt1D [55], Metallothionein, Farnesylated protein ATFP6, Farnesyl pyrophosphate synthase and Protein phosphatase 2A, RISBZ4 [56] from finger millet, SiARDP [41], SiCDPK24 [42], SiLTP [43], SiATG8a [44], SiNF-YA1 and SiNFYB8 [45], SiASR1 [46], SiASR4 [47] and SiMYB56…”

“…Drought stress is one of the most important abiotic factors affecting plant growth and productivity. Singh R.K. et al (2015) made an effort to characterize the drought-responsive gene EcDehydrin7 of finger millet by isolating and overexpressing it in tobacco. Tobacco plants overexpressing EcDehydrin7 conferred tolerance to drought.…”
