Expression of Epstein–Barr virus in Hodgkin lymphoma in a population of United Arab Emirates nationals

Abstract: Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) shows wide geographic variation in histological subtypes and in its association with the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). HL has three main epidemiological patterns (I, II and III). Type I pattern, which is prevalent in developing countries, shows a relatively high incidence in male children, a low incidence in the third decade and a second peak of high incidence in older age groups. Type III, which is usually seen in developed countries, is characterised by a low rate in children and a pronounc… Show more

“…This is in contrast to the low frequencies (35% to 38%) found in the USA [47], the United Arab Emirates [56], and the UK [57]. The age of the children studied was also important, as shown by Zhou et al [30] in China and by Preciado et al [54] in Argentina.…”

“…In contrast to these groups of Jews, the Bedouin patients, although representing a small group, showed a 66.7% rate of EBV infection104. Studies form the middle East indicate incidence rates of EBV in HL varying form 38–56 % with patterns of early-industrialized countries105,106. These epidemiologic studies led to the proposal of a model by Jarrett et al that EBV-associated HL cases can be divided into three groups according to age at exposure to EBV and age at HL diagnosis93.…”

“…However, histological subtypes of HL show wide geographical variation. Three main epidemiological patterns have been described for HL regarding age at presentation, the developmental level of a country, and its association with the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) (5). Turkey is a developing country, and lacks data on the different aspects of HL.…”
