Introduction: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is a global health problem that has claimed many lives worldwide. The disease is affecting almost all populations, but it poses a particular risk for groups such as the elderly and those with chronic diseases. Although the number of studies on clinical situations involving pregnant women and their infants infected with COVID-19 is increasing, the factors supporting the negative association between COVID-19 and pregnancy remain unclear. In this study, we aimed to examine the placental histopathologic structure using EGFR (Epidermal Growth Factor) antibody in placentas of COVID-19 pregnant patients. Materials and methods: In our study, placentas of a total of 40 pregnant women (regardless of age), including 20 pregnant women with C0VID-19 and 20 normotensive pregnant women, were used, and placentas were compared histopathologically and immunohistochemically. Results: In the hematoxylin and eosin stained sections of the control group placentas, tissue integrity was preserved and cellular structures were normal. In the placentas of Covid -19 group patients, it was observed that degenerations increased and cellular deformations developed. In sections of control group placentas, EGFR expression was negative in decidual cells and in areas with syncytial nodes. EGFR expression was positive in cytotrophoblast cells. In placenta sections of Covid-19 patients, EGFR expression was positive in vascular endothelium and Hofbauer cells. Conclusion: In our study, it was observed that EGFR expression, an important biomarker in tissue regeneration, was inhibited. We also concluded that Covid-19 caused degeneration and inflammation in placental tissue.

Introduction: One of the consequences of improper placentation is placenta previa, a condition in which the placenta is located on or near the internal cervical os. This condition is the major cause of bleeding in the last trimester of pregnancy. It is one of the causes of both maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. Placenta accreta is a disorder caused by abnormal invasion of the placental villi into the myometrium. In this study, we aimed to compare the histopathologic changes in placenta previa, placenta acreata and normotensive placentas during the third trimester of pregnancy. Materials and methods: In our study, placentas of a total of 60 pregnant women including 20 placenta previa, 20 placenta acreata and 20 normotensive pregnant women were used and the placentas were compared histopathologically. Results: In the control group placentas, the appearance of endothelial cells was normal, with a slight distribution of erythrocytes in the intervillous areas. Fibrinoid structures were observed to be smooth. Dysfunctional development of endothelial cells was observed in the sections of the placenta acreata group. Congestion and edema were observed in the vessels and degeneration was detected in the cells in the syncytial region. In placenta previa sections, muscle cells showed prominent pyknotic nucleus structures. Dilatations and fibronoid structures were seen in the vessels. Dense erythrocyte accumulation was detected in the intervillous areas. Conclusion: In our study, we concluded that placenta previa and placenta accreta cause very serious degenerations on the placentas. Objetivo: Analisar os critérios clínicos e parâmetros complementares para realização do diagnóstico precoce em casos de síndrome HELLP que permitam garantir um tratamento oportuno visando a redução da morbimortalidade materno-fetal. Métodos: Estudo científico realizado através do levantamento bibliográfico de artigos publicados entre os anos de 2017 a 2022 indexados nas bases de dados da SciELO, LILACS e PubMed. Resultados: Critérios clínicos e parâmetros complementares diagnósticos, sobretudo os critérios de Tennessee e Mississipi, são úteis na identificação da patologia. Ademais, manifestações clínicas somadas a biomarcadores de hemólise celular, enzimas hepáticas elevadas e trombocitopenia possibilitam o reconhecimento da doença e, quando analisados de forma precoce, melhoram o desfecho materno-fetal, evitando complicações inerentes. O tratamento vai do conservador ao cirúrgico, não contando com terapia farmacológica específica, sendo que o parto com remoção placentária é o tratamento definitivo. Considerações finais: Uma abordagem diagnóstica e terapêutica precoce é indispensável para evitar repercussões deletérias à saúde da gestante e do bebê. A identificação dos parâmetros que preveem a evolução da doença é primordial para definição de condutas subsequentes, redução da morbimortalidade e melhoria na qualidade de vida deste grupo.
