This study was conducted to examine the effects of different pseudopregnancy periods in nonpregnant sows on artificial lactation induction efficiency and milk composition. Sixteen pseudopregnant sows (n = 4 per group) were treated with 5 mg of estradiol dipropionate at 28 (Group D38), 35 (Group D45), 42 (Group D52), and 49 (Group D59) days after the end of estrus, followed by prostaglandin F2α as 0.175‐mg cloprostenol twice at 12 h intervals 10 days later. The overall success rate of lactation induction was 81.3%. The lactation rates were significantly higher in Groups D38, D45, and D59 (100.0%) than in Group D52 (25.0%). The milk immunoglobulin (Ig) G concentration was significantly higher in Group D38 than in Group D59. However, IgA levels and milk compositions (protein, ash, and lactose) did not differ among the groups. Lactation induction was successful between 38 and 59 days of pseudopregnancy. Apart from IgG, pseudopregnancy length did not affect milk components from 38 to 59 days of pseudopregnancy.

BackgroundPelvic inflammatory disease (PID) is the result of infection ascending through the endocervix to the uterus and fallopian tubes. Inflammation driven by infected host cells appears to be central to the development of tissue damage and associated reproductive complications. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents (NSAIDs) therefore have the potential to reduce the sequelae associated with pelvic infection.MethodsA search of four electronic reference databases, an internet search for relevant grey literature and a review of the bibliographies of identified publications was used to identify studies evaluating NSAIDs in the management of PID. A predefined search strategy was used to identify studies that included women with PID aged over 16 and diagnosed after 1980. Randomized controlled trials, nonrandomized controlled trials, and cohort studies with comparison group data were included without language restriction. Two reviewers independently assessed the studies against agreed criteria and extracted relevant data using a standardized pro forma. A meta-analysis to calculate the relative risk associated with NSAID use was planned if appropriate.ResultsForty-three studies were identified. After reviewing abstracts or full texts, two randomized controlled trials were found to meet the selection criteria for inclusion. The use of NSAIDs was reported to improve tubal patency, reduce pelvic adhesions and reduce suprapubic pain but the studies were of poor quality with a high risk of bias. Meta-analysis of the data was not performed.ConclusionsInsufficient data is available to support or refute the efficacy of NSAIDs in the prevention of short or long-term complications of PID.

Litter size in modern sows has been dramatically improved in recent decades by genetic selection for highly prolific sows. In a tropical environment, the average total number of pigs born and number born alive are reported to be as high as 17.2 and 15.1 piglets per litter, respectively. Therefore, the new production target in many herds aims to achieve 30–40 pigs weaned per sow per year. Despite the improvements in litter size, the mean preweaning piglet mortality rate remains high, at between 10% and 20%, in major pig‐producing countries. A sufficient daily feed intake by lactating sows is important for high milk production as sow milk yield is the limiting factor for piglet growth rate. Heat stress, which can occur when the ambient temperatures rise above 25°C, is one of the major problems that decreases daily feed intake and compromises milk yield. Therefore, it is necessary to encourage high feed intakes to achieve high milk yields. However, even with high nutrient intakes, productivity can be constrained by intestinal barrier function, limiting digestive ability, and allowing potential pathogens and/or toxins to become systemic. This is more likely greater under tropical conditions because of heat stress, exacerbating sow fertility problems. Underpinning sow herd performance, including responses to environmental challenges, is the selection of appropriate gilts, for example, selection and management for early puberty, thus presumably selecting the more fertile gilts and the correct management of lactation to improve the number of weaned piglets are some of the key factors for future reproductive efficiency of the farm under tropical conditions.
