Expression of cluster of differentiation 34 and vascular endothelial growth factor in breast cancer, and their prognostic significance

Abstract: Abstract. The aim of the present study was to investigate the immunohistochemical expression of cluster of differentiation (CD) 34 and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in breast cancer tissue, and their prognostic significance. High CD34 expression levels (microvessel density, >15/HPF) were identified in 27.3% (12/44) of cases, exhibiting no significant correlation with the clinicopathological characteristics of the patients. However, Kaplan-Meier analysis demonstrated that the survival time of patien… Show more

“…In this study, the five-year survival rate (82%) of patients with high VEGF score tended to be better than that (73%) of patients with low VEGF score, but there were no significant differences (p=0.094). Although the present study did not prove the prognostic value of VEGF expression in lung cancer, other papers also reported that VEGF expression did not correlate with the survival of breast cancer patients (16), of oral squamous cell carcinoma (17), of cervical carcinomas (18) and of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (19).…”

“…Such a correlation was reported by another study on breast cancer (25). By contrast, another study found no correlation between MVD and clinicopathologic variables (28). Tumor heterogeneity, the type of the endothelial marker used, hot spot selection and counting, angiogenesis heterogeneity, methods of detection and observer variability could explain these discrepancies (25).…”

“…Then, consistent with the in vitro evidences, we found ANXA5 suppression led to apparently decreased the in vivo tumorigenicity and LNM potential of Hca-P- transplanted mice. The attenuation of angiogenesis and lymphangiogenesis attenuate tumor development and metastasis 35 , 36 . Current work showed ANXA5 mediated Hca-P-transplantation induced murine tumorigenesis and metastasis via CD34 and VEGF-3, two well-known angiogenesis and lymphangiogenesis indicators 37 , 38 .…”
