Expression of CD30 mRNA, CD30L mRNA and a variant form of CD30 mRNA in restimulated peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) of patients with helminthic infections resembling a Th2 disease

Abstract: It has been proposed that CD30, a member of the tumour necrosis factor (TNF) receptor superfamily, is preferentially up-regulated on Th2-type human T cells. In order to investigate a correlation between infection with Echinococcus multilocularis and CD30 expression, we analysed regulation of CD30 mRNA, a variant form of CD30 mRNA (CD30v) and CD30 ligand (CD30L) mRNA expression on PBMC from patients with alveolar echinococcosis (AE) using reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR). In PBMC of pati… Show more

“…An alternative explanation may include the presence of transcription inhibitory factors within the SM or the lack/downmodulation of adhesion molecules able to anchor CD30 ϩ cells to the inflamed tissue (29). Our mRNA data are different from those of other researchers who failed to detect CD30 transcript in PBL (30). We believe that this discrepancy is due to the far more sensitive method used in our study.…”

“…However, our data are of some interest because the simultaneous expression of CD30v and CD30L has been noted, in the absence of CD30, in normal peripheral blood T cells from patients affected by helminthic infections. 36 Moreover, the parallel up-regulation of CD30v-and CD30L-specific transcripts was also observed after in vitro activation of peripheral blood mononuclear cells from healthy donors by helminthic antigens. 36 Finally, high levels of constitutive CD30v and CD30L mRNA and protein were noted in normal peripheral blood neutrophils (Gattei et al, unpublished observation).…”

“…Soluble levels of CD30 are elevated and are associated with the prognosis in Hodgkin's disease and AIDS (38). Elevated levels were also reported in patients with adult T cell leukemia and some of those with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, rheumatoid arthritis (39), chronic renal failure with primary growth retardation (40), atopic dermatitis (41)(42)(43), bullous pemphigoid (44), polymyositis/dermatomyositis (45), and helminth infection (46). Interestingly, some of these diseases are associated with eosinophilia (47)(48)(49)(50), and an especially positive correlation between the levels of soluble CD30 (sCD30) and eosinophilia was found in Hodgkin's disease (51).…”
