Expression of c‐erbB‐2 oncoprotein in salivary gland tumours: An immunohistochemical study

Abstract: Sections of formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded primary salivary gland tumours were stained with a monoclonal antibody to the c-erbB-2 oncoprotein to determine the incidence and significance of expression of this protein. The series of 131 tumours comprised 33 cases of pleomorphic adenoma, 2 of malignant mixed tumour, 1 oxyphil adenoma, 31 Warthin's tumours, 4 basal cell adenomas, 6 mucoepidermoid carcinomas, 14 acinic cell carcinomas, 19 adenoid cystic carcinomas, 3 squamous carcinomas, and 18 poorly differenti… Show more

“…Shrestha et al (26) and Sugano et al (27) found HER2 expression in only 4.5 (1/22) and 0% (0/9), respectively, of the studied mucoepidermoid carcinomas. Kernohan et al (28) reported positive immunostaining for HER2 in only 1 out of 6 cases with mucoepidermoid carcinomas. However, Weed et al (23), Cho et al (24) and Press et al (25) reported HER2 overexpression in 25, 36 and 38% of the studied cases.…”

“…HER2 overexpression occurs in 0 to 38% of mucoepidermoid carcinoma (22)(23)(24)(25)(26)(27)(28). So far, no previous study has evaluated the EGFR and HER2 expression in metastases and compared such an expression with that of corresponding primary mucoepidermoid carcinoma.…”

“…Previous studies with MMTV/ Ras mice have shown that MMTV is particularly active in parotid salivary glands and that this can lead to development of parotid tumors (33). In this regard, it is interesting to note that a certain proportion of human salivary gland tumors express elevated levels of ErbB2 (34)(35)(36)(37). Conversely, 14-3-3σ is downregulated through hypermethylation in certain salivary gland tumors (38).…”

“…Kärjä et al (1994) described positivity in 44% of cases, including malignant and benign tumors. However, other studies reported a rare expression of c-erbB-2 on these tumors (Kernohan et al, 1991;Shrestha et al, 1992).…”
