Expression of antioxidant molecules after peripheral nerve injury and regeneration

Abstract: Oxidative stress is considered to be one of the main causes of neural damage after injury. However, little is known about the changes in mRNA expression of anti-oxidant molecules that occur after injury and regenera-tion of the peripheral nerve. In the present study, the rat median nerve was transected, and transcriptional changes were studied at day 6 and day 12 after injury in both the proximal and the distal stumps, in the ab-sence or presence of microsurgical repair. The expres-sion profiles of the followi… Show more

“…Oxidative stress is considered to be one of the main causes of neural damage after injury and thus antioxidant molecules including CAT, SOD, and GST play an important role in peripheral nerve regeneration. 27 The beneficial effects of antioxidant agents such as melatonin, N-acetylcysteine and edaravone had been demonstrated in sciatic nerve regeneration after nerve crush, sciatic nerve axotomy and ischemia/reperfusion injury respectively. [28][29][30] In this study, the mRNA expressions of ZnSOD, CAT, GPx and MT enzymes were elevated within a short time.…”

“…In addition, previous studies indicated that oxidative stress serves a role in nerve destruction following injury (17,55). Furthermore, it has been demonstrated that antioxidants serve important roles in nerve recovery (56,57). MDA is an oxidative stress marker (58), while SOD is an antioxidative enzyme that detoxifies superoxide anions (59).…”
