Expression of adult and fetal natural killer cell markers in sinonasal lymphomas [see comments]

Abstract: The majority of sinonasal non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (NHLs) are thought to originate from T-cell lineage. However, they often express natural killer (NK)-cell markers so that their origin still remains obscure. In this study, cell type of sinonasal NHLs were characterized by immunohistochemical and Southern blot analyses. We examined nine patients with sinonasal NHL. Six patients with tonsillar or pharyngeal non-B-cell lymphomas served as a control group. Immunohistochemical study showed that all nine cases of si… Show more

“…Expression of CLA was examined in 52 NK lymphoma patients who were diagnosed at the Department of Pathology of Okayama University, the Aichi Cancer Center and Fukuoka University. Details of the clinicopathological features of 27 of the cases have been reported previously (Suzumiya et al, 1994(Suzumiya et al, , 2000Nakamura et al, 1995Nakamura et al, , 1997Miyamoto et al, 1998;Hirakawa et al, 1999). The diagnostic criteria for NK-cell lymphomas were as follows: medium-large nucleated lymphoma cells infiltrated diffusely and often with angiocentric, angiodestructive features and necrotic foci.…”

“…In the new WHO classification, this disease is called extranodal NK/T-cell lymphoma, nasal type. It is called 'NK/T' rather than simply 'NK' because although most cases have genuine NK-cell neoplasm, some have cytotoxic T-cell neoplasm (Suzumiya et al, 1994). The primary site of involvement is the nasal cavity, but sometimes identical neoplasms primarily develop in the extranasal sites.…”

“…(2) Immunophenotype is as follows; CD45(LCA) + sCD3 ) cCD3e + CD56 + , myeloid antigens ) , and B-cell antigens ) (Suzumiya et al, 1994). Cytotoxic granule-associated proteins, granzyme B, TIA-1 and perforin, are positive.…”

“…For determination of cell lineage, immunohistochemical examination with various monoclonal antibodies and Southern blotting of T-cell receptor genes were performed, as previously described [20]. In addition, diagnosis of ATLL was confirmed by demonstration of the monoclonal integration of human T lymphotropic virus type-I (HTLV-I) by Southern blotting [21].…”
