Expression of acute phase proteins and inflammatory cytokines in mouse mammary gland followingStaphylococcus aureuschallenge and in response to milk accumulation

Abstract: We used a mouse model of pathogenic (Staphylococcus aureus) and non-pathogenic (teat sealing) mammary inflammation to investigate mRNA expression of several inflammatory cytokines and acute phase proteins (APP) in mammary tissue and liver, and the appearance of some of these factors in plasma and milk. The expression levels of IL1β and TNFα were markedly up-regulated in Staph. aureus-inoculated mammary tissue at 72 h, whilst IL6 was up-regulated to a lesser extent in a way which was not confined to the inocula… Show more

“…For example, members of the SAA family are known to be expressed in various normal extrahepatic tissues in humans, horses, and cattle . In cancer , and after bacterial challenge or milk stasis, focal expression of SAA3 is dramatically upregulated in the udder of dairy cows and mice and enters into milk with maximum concentrations similar to blood plasma .…”

“…The mouse model of infectious mastitis can be used as a prelude to the study of bovine mastitis. Numerous studies have adopted this strategy for exploring the effect of various antibiotics ( Demon et al, 2012 ; Fu et al, 2014 ; Nazemi et al, 2014 ).…”

“…The liver is the main source of acute-phase proteins (Baumann and Gauldie 1994 ; Nazemi et al 2014 ) and has a unique vascular system receiving the majority of the blood supply faces continuous exposure to foreign pathogens and commensal bacterial products which could trigger TLRs signaling (Nakamoto and Kanai 2014 ). At the same time, the occurring of anti-inflammatory response could avoid the injury of liver (Nakamoto and Kanai 2014 ).…”
