Expression of a plastid-localized sugar transporter in the suspensor is critical to embryogenesis

Abstract: Plant growth and development rely on sugar transport between source and sink cells and between different organelles. The plastid-localized sugar transporter GLUCOSE-6-PHOSPHATE TRANSLOCATER1 (GPT1) is an essential gene in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana). Using a partially rescued gpt1 mutant and cell-specific RNAi suppression of GPT1, we demonstrated that GPT1 is essential to the function of the embryo suspensor and the development of the embryo. GPT1 showed a dynamic expression/accumulation pattern during … Show more

“…It binds directly to the W‐box in the promoter of the GPT1 gene, which is highly expressed during pollen maturation and responsible for transporting glucose‐6‐phosphate into plastids for starch and/or fatty acid biosynthesis (Zheng et al, 2018). Recently, it has been reported that the suspensor expression of GPT1 is critical for embryogenesis (Zhang et al, 2021a). Whether it also acts downstream of MAPK in embryogenesis is worth exploring.…”

“…To further understand the cellulose synthesis-related functions of MdFRK2 in stems, we heterologously expressed it in poplar ( Populus clone 717) under the expression of CaMV promoter. Poplar is rich in cellulose and is an important source material for everyday products such as cloth, paper and biofuels [ 25 ]. Analysis of the DNA and mRNA levels revealed that three heterologous lines (OE#1, OE#4 and OE#9) (Fig.…”

“…Likewise, in cotton, Ghaoc2 and Gaco2-mutants plants fail to accumulate starch granules in pollen grains and result in male sterile plants (Khan et al, 2020(Khan et al, , 2022. In Arabidopsis, the gene AtGPT1's role was also found in reproduction, including the pollen development process (Zhang et al, 2020a;Zheng et al, 2018). Furthermore, Lin et al (2020) also found a low amount of starch accumulation in primordial differentiation stages of rice under HT stress conditions which lead to the reduction in the yield.…”
