Expression of a mouse Ig V gene in antibodies of three immunoglobulin classes

Abstract: In an earlier study we found that some mouse strains, including the C57BL/6, produced irregular IgG anti-(4-hydroxy-3-nitrophenyl)acetyl (NP) antibodies to protein conjugates of this hapten. This antibody had heteroclitic fine specificity and a characteristic isoelectric focusing pattern. Breeding studies suggested that these qualities of the C57BL/6 anti-NP were controlled by a V gene of the heavy chain. We have now found that this V gene is expressed in anti-NP antibodies and plaque-forming cells of all majo… Show more

“…A longstanding and extensive body of literature shows that antibody pI mainly reflects paratope biochemistry and epitope specificity (13,16,19,35,44,49,57). This fact is evident within a collection of anti-gp120 MAbs that have identical IgG1 Fc portions (Table 2).…”

“…Indeed shared Id among IgM, IgA, IgG and IgE antibodies were reported in several experimental systems [13,15,32,33]. It has also been demonstrated that aId obtained from antibodies of one Ig class can suppress or enhance an immune response in other classes against the respective antigen [13,14, …”

“…When the 19S antibodies were obtained from NIP-primed NPboosted mice, the affinity for the boosting hapten, NP-cap, was lower than for NIP-cap, The relative affinities varied from 3.7 In the 2-month challenge inter\'al group to 21 in the 12-month group. We did not have enough 19S secondary response antibody from NIP-NIP or NP-NP immunizations to be tested bj the HPI method, but the specificities of direct plaque-forming cells in NP-NP immunization have been tested in this laboratory by Imanishi et al (16). At that time the relative affinity was 0.37-that is, less than 10^ of the values in the NIP-primed groups.…”
