Expression, Characterization and Immunogenicity of a Major Outer Membrane Protein from Vibrio alginolyticus

Abstract: Vibrio alginolyticus is one of the Vibrio pathogens common to humans and marine animals. During infection and induction of the host immune response, outer membrane proteins of bacteria play an important role. In this study, an outer membrane protein gene (ompW) was cloned from V. alginolyticus and expressed in Escherichia coli. The 645 bp open reading frame (ORF) encodes a protein of 214 amino acid residues with a predicted molecular weight of 23.3 kDa. The amino acid sequence showed a high identity with that … Show more

“…Vaccination with OmpK and OmpW has been shown to be effective against Vibrio infections in fish (Qian et al 2007, Li et al 2008. In the present study, the N-terminal amino acid sequence of the OmpU of V. alginolyticus was found to have very high homology with those of other Vibrio (≤92%) by BLAST analysis.…”

“…They are basically composed of protein, lipid and sugar, which could be easily recognized as foreign substances by the host's immunological defense systems (Qian et al 2007). These OMPs play an important role in infection and pathogenicity in the host (Tsolis 2002 (Wang et al 2003).…”

“…alginolyticus was found to have a high similarity to Vibrio species [2]. There are many reports that Vibrio species possess and express Vibrio parahaemolyticus toxin genes, such as V. hollisae which has been reported to be capable of producing TDH toxin [9].…”

“…The results of multiplex PCR confirmed the presence of toxin genes. Vibrio alginolyticus and Vibrio parahaemolyticus are considered as causative organisms of gastrointestinal disease and are both responsible for substantial financial damage in the aquaculture industry [14,2]. Vibrio • toxR gene sequence accession number KP146109…”
