Expression and significance of EBV, ARID1A and PIK3CA in gastric carcinoma

Abstract: AT-rich interaction domain 1A (ARID1A) and phosphatidylinositol-4,5-bisphosphate 3-kinase catalytic subunit α (PIK3CA) serve important roles in the formation and development of numerous malignancies including gastric cancer. Accumulating evidence has demonstrated that Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is a pathogenic virus associated with gastric cancer. The present study aimed to investigate the association between EBV infection, and the expression levels of ARID1A and PIK3CA in gastric cancer. EBER in sit… Show more

“…The present results suggested that ARID1A and PIK3CA may be associated in the development and progression of GC via a specific mechanism. In particular, the PIK3CA mutation rate has been reported to be associated with GC penetration [16], and ICGC reported Mutations of ARID1A and PIK3CA are known to be mutually exclusive in GC, with similar results in this study. The present results suggested that ARID1A and PIK3CA may be associated in the development and progression of GC via a specific mechanism.…”

“…The present results suggested that ARID1A and PIK3CA may be associated in the development and progression of GC via a specific mechanism. In particular, the PIK3CA mutation rate has been reported to be associated with GC penetration [16], and ICGC reported mutation rates of 9.7% in Japanese patients. However, in this study there was no case of PIK3CA mutation.…”

“…It was also shown that EBV infection is associated with a reduction of the number of CD4 + Tlymphocytes in patients with EBV-related cancer (20). Despite the involvement of EBV infection in the development of cancer having been extensively studied (5,8,9,(21)(22)(23)(24)(25)(26)(27), reports analyzing the initial phase of immune response and lymphocyte activation affected by viral infection are rare. During primary EBV infection, antibodies to VCA IgM are generated and persist from weeks to months.…”

“…EBV is a carcinogenic virus, and studies have shown that the expression levels of ARID1A and PIK3CA are closely associated with the depth of GC invasion. As such, PIK3CA mutations in EBV-associated GC are usually accompanied by ARID1A mutations [27]. In the present study, we detected a high frequency of ARID1A and PIK3CA mutations; thus in the future, we intend to investigate the relationship between ARID1A, PIK3CA and EBER, and to analyze the expression of these proteins in GC and adjacent normal tissues.…”
