Exposure to ionizing radiations and changes in blood cells and interleukin-6 in radiation workers

Abstract: Long-term exposure to ionizing radiation (IR) can cause dire health consequences even less than the dose limits. Previous biomonitoring studies have focused more on complete blood counts (CBCs), with non-coherent results. In this study, we aimed to investigate the association between exposure to IR and cytokine interleukin-6 (IL-6) along with hematological parameters in Tabriz megacity’s radiation workers. In this hospital-based study, blood samples were taken from 33 radiation workers (exposed group) and 34 n… Show more

“…gamma radiation, X-ray radiation and electron beam radiation on biological cells is an interesting subject to understand complex physiochemical processes. 1 , 2 It is useful to improve cancer treatment, chemotherapy and development of biomedical devices. 3 Radiation used in cancer therapy cause changes in red blood cell – cytoskeleton, lipid membrane, phospholipid bilayer, and leakage of proteins depending on its wavelength, dose rate, and exposure time.…”

“…NIR is low frequency radiation that disperses energy through heat and increased molecular movement such as ultraviolet rays (part of it), visible light, infrared rays, and radio waves. IR, which includes alpha and beta particles and some electromagnetic radiations (e.g., gamma and X-rays), can, directly and indirectly, alter the normal structure of a living cell (Bahrami Asl et al, 2023). Ionizing radiation is used in diagnostic devices such as X-rays, computed tomography (CT) and dental X-rays used in Medical Imaging (Amare & Dagne, 2020; Applegate et al, 2021).…”

“…Recent years have seen a significant increase in the use of radiation-emitting materials, devices, and ionising radiation technology, particularly in sectors such as industry, agriculture, and medicine ( 1 ). With the widespread adoption of interventional radiology procedures worldwide, workers involved in these operations may face substantial levels of radiation exposure due to the complexity and duration of each procedure ( 2 ).…”
