Exposure to alcohol or tobacco affects the pattern of maturation in oral mucosal cells: a cytohistological study

Abstract: The maturation pattern of cells in the three anatomic sites showed changes that may be associated with the synergistic effect of tobacco and alcohol. Also, the severity of histopathological findings was associated with the increase in the number of cells in the deeper epithelial layers.

“…2 Noninvasive methods, such as cytopathology, have proved effective in the early detection of cell changes that are not clinically visible in patients exposed to risk factors and in potentially malignant lesions. 3,4,5,6 However, to have a better understanding of the risk of malignancy of each lesion, the correlation of cytopathology with complementary techniques such as immunocytochemistry may improve the effectiveness of this screening process. The expression of markers associated with cell adhesion (e.g., E-cadherin) and with cell differentiation (e.g., involucrin) may help predict the risk of malignancy, as their functions are dysregulated during carcinogenesis.…”

“…With the introduction of quantitative techniques, oral cytology has become an important preventive exam for monitoring the oral mucosa exposed to carcinogens [2][3][4][5][6] . From these studies, it became apparent the individual nature of this type of evaluation, suggesting that some individuals are more susceptible than others to oral cancer development.…”

“…Over time, many studies have sought to evaluate the influence of extrinsic factors (tobacco and alcohol consumption) and intrinsic factors such as sex and age in the process of oral epithelium maturation 2,7 . However, it remains uncertain whether the consumption of alcohol and tobacco, in addition to individual parameters modify the normal process of epithelial maturation of the oral cavity.…”
