Exposomal research in the context of birth cohorts

Abstract: Exposome complements the genome by encompassing all human environmental exposures from conception onward. Exposome is composed of the following 3 overlapping domains of exposures: general external, specific external, and internal. Assessment of exposome in critical stages of life is important for understanding the link between environmental exposures and health outcomes. Birth cohorts provide an ideal study setting for exposomal research because environmental exposures can be assessed from prenatal period to y… Show more

“…Moreover, certain life stages are recognized to be more susceptible to environmental exposures with regard to specific health outcomes such as asthma (15). In this context, the use of prospective birth cohort studies has been advocated (11,27). However, it should be pointed out that biomarkers of exposure might not be continuously recorded for a long time.…”

“…Moreover, certain life stages (for example, periods of organ development) have been identified as being more susceptible to environmental exposures with regard to asthma and allergic outcomes ( 3 , 16 ). In this regard, the use of prospective birth cohort studies has been advocated ( 16 , 33 ).…”

“…Since exposures are central to allergic disease, framing our understanding of allergic diseases in terms of the individual level exposome is likely to yield new insights. Indeed, many recent reviews have superbly outlined our understanding of the leading factors of the exposome in allergic disease (74)(75)(76)(77)(78). It seems that almost everywhere we look, we can see the impact of specific factors of the exposome on allergic disease.…”
