Context matters in International Business, but to what extent does it influence the content of knowledge? This study offers a systematic literature review on the internationalization of New Zealand firms. A geographically isolated small open economy (SMOPEC) with audacious trade aspirations, a strong domestic institutional environment, favorable attitude toward trade, and entrepreneurial small-to-medium size enterprises (SMEs), New Zealand provides an enlightening context to study internationalization. Using a sample of 95 studies, the review identifies antecedents, stimuli, capabilities, strategy, process and outcomes underpinning internationalizing New Zealand firms (INZFs). Context matters but not in the manner anticipated. On one hand research on the internationalization of New Zealand firms is largely congruent with extant knowledge, on the other the New Zealand context shapes uniquely, how and what scholars choose to research.

Surprisingly little theoretical or empirical research is available on Auckland's actual functional and geographic connectivity, including developments relating to closer economic relations with Australia. This paper draws on the geography of accumulation literatures to argue that close attention must be given to developments in the three circuits of capital (trade, production and finance) if the changing character and contributions of globalising firm networks are to be discerned and understood. The empirical investigations show that for Australian owned firms globalising rather than purely Australasian networks are the norm, network complexity is considerable and that it makes sense to think of Auckland's economy in globalising terms. A globalising networks perspective means that estimates of the magnitude and assessments of the character of employment contributions of Australian owned firms to the Auckland economy reflects these interdependencies.

For many Western corporations, Japan poses formidable barriers to export and investment. Although trade policy confrontations with Japan have been scrutinized, the strategies pursued by Western corporations in attempting to penetrate the Japanese economy remain poorly understood. This paper addresses this lacuna via a corporate case study. Conceptually, we provide an alternative to the established theory of the international firm, outlining a model that integrates the related concepts of spatial entry advantages-spatial entry bamers, learning-bargaining processes, and control-efficiency considerations. We explore the model empirically by examining MacMillan Bloedel's (MB's) strategy of export (and investment) diversification toward Japan. The data come mainly from unstructured interviews with representatives inside and outside the firm. The analysis documents the extensive marketing initiatives undertaken by MB in pursuit of Japanese markets and the substantial changes required in its British Columbia-based production facilities. In the terms of the model presented, MB has invested to an unusual degree (among forest product corporations) in understanding Japanese markets and in gaining bargaining leverage in order to exploit its entry advantages effectively. More so than rival firms, which have relied on traditional ways of tapping into Japanese markets, MB has stressed the efficiency benefits of having greater control within the Japanese distribution system.
