Exploring which test-taker characteristics predict young L2 learners’ performance on listening and reading comprehension tests

Abstract: Test-taker characteristics (TTCs), or individual difference variables, are known to be a systematic source of variance in language test performance. Although previous research has documented the impact of a range of TTCs on second language (L2) learners’ test performance, few of these studies have involved young learners. Given that young L2 learners undergo rapid maturational changes in their cognitive abilities, are susceptible to affective factors in unique ways, and have little autonomy with respect to the… Show more

“…The mixed and sometimes unstable effect of various factors on test-taker perceptions poses a great challenge to test-taker engagement. Researchers have sought to understand the effects of test-taker characteristics on test performances (e.g., Kunnan, 1994; Nakatsuhara, 2011; O’Sullivan & Green, 2011; Sok et al, 2021), but there is a dearth of investigations into how task features and/or test-taker characteristics affect test takers’ perceptions of language assessments. In this VSI, I introduced two studies in which efforts were made to understand factors affecting test-taker perceptions.…”
