Exploring the value of feminist theory in understanding digital crimes: Gender and cybercrime types

This article draws on the distinction between socio-economic and psychosocial cybercrime proposed by Lazarus (2019) to investigate whether men and women hold different perceptions of digital crimes across these two dimensions. Informed by the synergy between feminist theory and the Tripartite Cybercrime Framework (TCF), our survey examined respondents' differential perceptions of socio-economic cybercrime (online fraud) and psychosocial cybercrime (cyberb… Show more

“…Indeed, Afghanistan is a strongly patriarchal society [ 30 ]. So, differential cultural expectations of men and women in society generally socialize men and women distinctively as masculine and feminine individuals, e.g., prescribing distinct acceptable dress codes, according to feminist perspectives [ 32 , 33 , 34 , 35 ]. Based on the above insights on gender, cultural and familial forces, we argue that women adhered to wearing facemasks more than men due to gender socialization and expectations of women to be submissive to social forces harmonious to their gender, such as the wearing of hijabs or niqabs to hide their faces in public spaces.…”

Thus, contextual cues and terminologies matter when considering these cybercrime types.…”

“…In the realm of crime reporting, the media plays a pivotal role in disseminating information on crime statistics, trends, and the workings of law enforcement agencies, shedding light on issues such as the pervasive problem of marital rape. Recognizing that public awareness is a potent tool in combating crime, the media assumes a crucial role in holding public officials accountable (Lazarus et al, 2022). Feminist theory, with its critical examination of power dynamics and gender inequalities, underscores the media's potential to address issues like marital rape and challenge societal norms (McQuail, 2013).…”

“…The study underscores the importance of responsible and comprehensive reporting in promoting awareness and driving societal change. In a landscape where digital media coexists with traditional print, newspapers continue to be an essential conduit for this critical discourse (Lazarus et al, 2022). Through diligent fact-checking and a commitment to truth, the media upholds its pivotal role in upholding democratic values and advocating for justice (Finn & Brown, 2022).…”
